The INHSU Early and Mid-Career Researcher Special Interest Group (INHSU EMCR) have an EMCR Leadership Award to celebrate bold, inclusive, and collaborative leadership by researchers working in the health and human rights of people who use drugs.
This isn’t just about recognition—the award honours EMCR leaders, while also supporting their continued growth through a nine-month mentorship with a senior academic from the INHSU network.

Award prize
The prize is designed to facilitate career growth and extend EMCR leadership impact. It includes:

Complimentary INHSU Conference registration and travel scholarship

15-minute plenary slot at the INHSU 2026 or 2027 conference (10-minute presentation + certificate presentation)

A 9-month, tailored mentorship with a senior academic in the INHSU network
Who should apply?
You are eligible for the INHSU EMCR Award if you:

Are an early to mid-career researcher within 10 years of completing your most recent degree (or currently studying)

Are a current member of INHSU and the INHSU EMCR Special Interest Group (membership is free for students and up to three years post-doctoral)

Work in a field related to the health or human rights of people who use drugs

Are not a current member of the INHSU EMCR Special Interest Group Executive Committee
What we’re looking for
The EMCR Leadership Award is aligned with INHSU’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan’s three core pillars: Knowledge Exchange, Education, and Advocacy.
We are looking for demonstrated leadership in one or more of the following:
- Bold, innovative and inclusive leadership that inspires collaboration in the sector
- Seeks to establish, promote and strengthen meaningful partnerships and collaborative opportunities to drive outcomes
- Ensures community-based and person-centered care and engagement
- Commitment to ongoing development of knowledge and skills in the sector, and application of evidence-based practice
- Sets a high standard of integrity by leading through example and maintains high personal standards

Meet 2025 recipient, Dr Amanda Slaunwhite
Dr Amanda Slaunwhite has been awarded the inaugural INHSU EMCR Leadership Award, recognising her outstanding contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of people who use drugs. A population health researcher and Scientific Director for Correctional Health Services in British Columbia, Amanda’s work spans substance use, mental health, and the health of incarcerated people, with a longstanding commitment to partnering with people with lived and living experience. Her leadership, impact, and dedication to strengthening evidence-based care make her a deserving first recipient of this award.
