Background:
The Sibambisene Parenting Programme, developed by NACOSA and Clowns Without Borders South Africa, is a harm reduction initiative designed to support parents of young children (0–10 years), including those facing challenges such as substance use, rooted in compassion and practicality, the programme aims to reduce child maltreatment by addressing underlying stressors like isolation, unmet needs, and lack of parenting skills, It fosters healthy family dynamics through evidence-based strategies, emphasizing positive discipline, child development and caregiver well-being.
Description of model of care:
The programme’s model of care is delivered over 8–10 weekly group sessions, blending interactive methods like drama, storytelling, and play to engage participants. It includes one-on-one check-ins and culminates in a graduation ceremony to celebrate progress. Key components focus on building secure parent-child attachments, stress management, and connecting families to community resources by involving co-caregivers and promoting collective problem solving, Sibambisene strengthens support networks and reduces reliance on punitive parenting practices.
Results:
Since June 2024, parents who use drugs were recruited within the outreach and OST programs, 344 participants have attended sessions, with 280 (123 females and 157 males) having completed the 10-session programs. Enrollment and follow-up remain ongoing.
Participant Feedback included:
“During the parenting sessions I have gained knowledge and information about the children’s developmental stages”.
“These sessions have assisted me in getting closer to my child. I can see now that the bond is getting stronger. We can now sit for hours and talk.”
Conclusion:
Sibambisene redefines parenting support by centering dignity and empowerment, facing relocation, employment, reuniting families, or adjusting to new communities, parents encounter systemic barriers. Sibambisene fosters connection and resilience, creating safer, healthier futures. Sustainable change arises from compassion, education, and community solidarity.
