To all 677 of you from 60 countries—whether it was your 12th INHSU conference or your first—we hope you left INHSU 2024 as inspired as we did.
This year marked one of our most significant conferences yet, with a record-breaking 526 abstract submissions. The result? 319 oral presentations from 211 speakers, 239 posters from 188 presenters, and 79 chairpersons delivering 70 hours of content over five days, including the Policy, Community, and Prisons pre-conference events.
INHSU 2024 sparked crucial discussions on hepatitis C equity, safer supply, NSP scale-up, drug policy, harm reduction, and more. The equal representation of community voices alongside researchers, clinicians, and policymakers made this year a true catalyst for change.
INHSU 2024 may be over, but the work is just beginning. We can’t wait to see you in South Africa next year.

Our scholarship recipients
This year, we received a record-breaking number of scholarship applications, with over 287 submissions. We are proud to have supported 42 scholarship recipients from 15 countries across four categories: Community, Prisons, New Investigator and Program, Policy and Practice. Unfortunately, some scholarship recipients faced visa challenges and were unable to attend the conference in person.
RAPPORTEURS
Each year, our conference concludes with rapporteur sessions, where experts summarise the key insights and takeaways from the week. These sessions offer a valuable opportunity to revisit important discussions, highlight emerging themes, and ensure that the knowledge shared at the conference continues to inspire action long after the event. Philip Bruggmann Lecture Award Launched
At the opening ceremony of INHSU 2024, Dr. Philip Bruggmann, from the Arud Centre for Addiction Medicine in Switzerland and co-founder of INHSU, was welcomed to the stage for the first-ever Philip Bruggmann Lecture Award.
In his heartfelt speech, he reflected on the early days of INHSU, shared the organisation’s journey, and unveiled the new award, which will celebrate innovation and leadership within the network.

INHSU 2024 featured over 100+ sessions on hepatitis C and other infectious diseases, harm reduction and drug policy. There were tracks on epidemiology and public health research, clinical research, social science and policy research, and good practice models of care for people who use drugs.
